Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
