The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to take a cautious route."
