This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

We present a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical physical horror, but within Together resides a intense contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a special spark to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
