Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
